The good and bad about the internet [May. 19th, 2011|01:23 am]
Slashing the Mythbusters

I don't like it when people get up on soap boxes and preach for hours on end but I do like to be aware of what's going on in society.  I really thought that as a people we had moved away from the times of deviants, perverts, and other insulting names for people who enjoy things that are different from 'mainstream' like fan fiction.  I really had no idea how much hatred there still is about fan fiction.  I really can't wrap my head around it.

While looking for more mythbusters fiction, I ran across several articles and blogs that were outraged this community existed at all.  And the responses were horrible.  One of them said that all slash writers should be round up and shot.  What could anyone in this community have done to warrant that kind of comment?  The answer is nothing.

This community doesn't infringe on anyone's rights.  This is for exploring your imagination and expressing your creativity and sometimes writing really hot sex scenes between your characters.  It's all wrapped up in our cultural issues with homosexuality, creativity, being honest about sex, etc.

The main reason that I wanted to post this is that I love everyone who has contributed to this community.  I have read most of the stories and every single one made me think in a different way about the relationship between Adam and Jamie.  One made me cry and I actually had to spend some time really thinking about it.  People are so focused on the 'horror' of the slash pairings that they stop reading at once and this story was so incredible and had ideas about civilization, psychology, family bonds, etc.  I swear I'm stopping now.  I just wanted to say thank you for putting this group together and I can't wait to see what lies ahead.  You are awesome.

Wow. I am well aware of the hatred slash fanfiction and fanficiton in general gets from people outside and even inside fandom sometimes, but saying that all slash authors should be round up and shot? What the actual fuck? I've read articles that called us "disgusting" and the like, but never something so completely hateful and threatening.

I really don't understand people at all sometimes.

Thanks, bb. You're lovely for saying what you did. <3

*pops head above parapet*

That's so odd, stumbling into a comm I've never been in before and finding myself thinking "Hang on, I recognise that name from somewhere..." and discovering one of my fellow daily_misha posters! Heh. *waves* :)

Couldn't possibly agree more, hon. Very lovely put.

I know I'm kind of used to the backlash from being on the fringe but dealing with people who seriously say things like that isn't ever easy. Times like that we just have to remind ourselves that some people are just asshats of the nth degree.
